Sharing a story without words can be a challenge. Art is meant to evoke emotions, but it is up to the viewer to interpret the story behind it... and that's the beauty of it. As observers, we rely on our own experiences to make assumptions and interpretations. Graphic novels, however, challenge us to go beyond assumptions and instead immerse ourselves in the details that unveil the story. This realization came to me after taking Hillary Chute's class: History of Comics.
This project was personal and intimate. I began by reflecting on the mundane moments of my daily life, as they are the habits we experience almost automatically. While my days vary in mood and spontaneity, these fluctuations do not necessarily capture the essence of my everyday life - but my habits do. I wanted to give importance to those habitual moments and feature them in my story.
I storyboarded and started creating iterations of illustrations. I hand-drew all of them and then transferred them to Illustrator for final details and touch-ups.
